The Rhythm of the Music Called Us is a public history project focused on preserving and celebrating a long history of salsa dance and music within Ohio. Throughout its history, Ohio has served as a point of contact to the globe at large, providing a place of home where people from everywhere have found space to create, live, and share culture. Ohio is not simply a monolith, but rather a patchwork of people who come from many different walks of life, bringing all of their individual experience with them. Through the use of oral histories, interviews, and presented galleries, The Rhythm of the Music Called Us aims to give the viewer an expanded understanding of Ohio’s history of salsa music and dance, and of the Ohioians who serve as conduits for its continuance.
The Rhythmn of the Music Called Us was born as a collaborative project in experiential learning between Dr. Martha Santos of the University of Akron and Kara Hochstedler, a former student at the University of Akron.

Kara Hochstedler recently graduated from the University of Akron with a degree in Global Studies, with a minor in History and Spanish. As a former student of Dr. Santos, Kara was introduced to the world of Salsa music and dance while taking Dr. Santos’ class on the history of Salsa dance.
